Week 7- The Pittl's

First of all, I have to mention that I made us stop at Chevron in Fillmore, because I remembered they used to carry one of my favorite candy bars from childhood- Abba Zaba's. Success! They still carry them, so we stocked up. Vanilla taffy and peanut butter filling- chewy goodness!

This was a special trip to Idaho as it was Teagie-boy's first time meeting Grandma & Grandpa Green-eyes.

Even though it had been 2 years, it didn't take long for the cousins to get reconnected. They had so much fun playing on the slip & slide and eating otter pops.

Gavin was so happy to be a "big" kid now and get his own rootbeer float!

Grandpa has pictures with all of his grandbabies going for a horseyback ride.

Kaleb wanted to try being the horsey too.

The kids had fun feeding popcorn to the geese at Julia Davis park. Of course, they had to eat some of the popcorn too.

Afterwards we went to the rose garden for a pic nic.

Gavin helped Grandpa mow the grass.

All the kids loved Uncle Karl & Aunt Mary's backyard- jumping on the tramp, flying on the swingset, splashing in the pool, and...

...roasting marshmallows over the bonfire for S'mores.

We took all 17 of the cousins to a fun sprinkler park. Madisin is 2 weeks shy of being a year older than Gavin- she is just a tiny little thing!

The rock climbers made it to the top.

3 of the 5 brothers.

Uncle Karl, Aunt Mary, and their 3 generations.

Daddy-daughter relationships are sweet!

My Aunt Mary was my "second mom" while I was growing up and spent my summers in Idaho. I am so impressed by her love and generosity and amazed at her raising her great-granddaughter.

Uncle Tony & Aunt Margo came to town with their 10 grandkids. They are also a couple of my heroes!

Only 10 of the 20 of us. We sure miss everyone and can't wait for the next time we're all together again!

Lovely ladies and cute boys!

Uncle Adam has 6 kids now- tee hee! We got to visit with him before he headed off to Oregon to visit Auntie LaChele.
Until we meet again, we send our love and prayers to everyone!

Week 6- The Lee's

We stayed at this shabby chic bed and breakfast that was just darling! It's actually the guest bedroom at my mom and papa's.

We toured the Patterson's soon-to-be mansion. I can't wait to see it next year after they've moved in.

We swam lots, in the backyard...

...and at the Stewart's.

I celebrated my 35th birthday with family and friends.

Cute lil' cousins- Gavin and Isaac.

We went up to Salt Lake for extended family pics. After the photographer left, I took a few on my camera too. Here's Mom and Papa.

My crew of 6.

Whitney, Isaac, and Brent.

Mandy & Coleman.

Jared & Erika.

Kris (missing his girlfriend Shannon who moved to Arizona for school).

The brothers.

The cardigan club.

Noe and her aunties.

My barbarian princess and I.

Afterwards we met up with some long-lost, but very dear friends- Marc & Diane,

and Lon & Rebecca and their gorgeous red-hair crew.

Len and his friends from the Mormon Transhumanist Association.

Of course, we had to visit the Salt Lake Temple too, before heading off to Idaho.
I love all the beautiful flowers on the Temple grounds!

Celebrity Couple

I had Len take a little quiz with me from my Disney Family e-newsletter. We scored as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

The two of you are the salt of the earth. Genuine and homey, you're no strangers to hard work. At the end of the day, however, you're all to happy to return to home, hearth- and each other. The two of you are equally expressive, artistic and talented, and yet the sum of your whole is somehow greater than your parts. Supremely grateful for who and what you are, together and apart, you give back whatever, wherever, and however you can.
We're not huge country music fans, so we had a little chuckle, but I do like songs by both of them, and I do think they are great people. The other couples were Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony, Will Smith & Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie. As a side note, my roommates back in the day thought I should marry Brad Pitt, then hyphenate my last name so I could be Jennifer Pittl-Pitt, ha ha! And Angelina happens to have Leonard's birthday. I'm so glad we didn't score as them though- tee hee.
Click here to take the quiz, and please let me know who you scored as.

Let Me Eat Cake!

I love The Ace of Cakes and thought this sketch by Duff was just darling.

I came up with my own design and then e-mailed this to Ms. Cakes in Las Vegas.

Voila! This is the eye-candy cake from wonderland that she made for my 35th birthday this week. Not only was it the prettiest birthday cake I've ever had, it was tasty too! The bottom layer was vanilla with strawberry cream filling, the middle was chocolate with custard, and the top was lemon with lemon jell. We had 30 friends and family members over to join us for an Italian dinner followed up with this beauty a la mode. If you're in the Vegas area you should check out Ms. Cakes!

Sometimes, I wanna SCREAM!

Yesterday was a bit of a stressful day, so my hubby is going to do a guest post on here to tell y'all about it. Ugh!

*****

Yesterday was supposed to be our ideal travel day. Departure just after noon, arrival early evening. No early departure, no late arrival, short lay-over in Detroit - what more could one ask for?

Of course, we had had the previous day's chaos of discovering that our passports expired earlier than the normal 5 years (thank you, Official Travel!). In my desperate attempts to determine how to best salvage our vacation, I read on the US Customs and Borders website that children under the age of 16 only needed birth certificates to travel. So armed with my freshly-minted passport and our kids' birth certificates, our friend Kevin dropped us off at the airport for our flight to Las Vegas.

When we went to check-in, the Delta Airlines agent informed us that we could not board the plane. Excuse me? He even called Customs and Borders and they said no. So I went over to a phone and talked to them too. When I told him what I read on their website he told me that he had not looked at their website recently, he neither knew nor cared what it said, but that he was telling me what I needed to know. I could drive across the border with the documents I had, I could fly domestically within the US with what I had, but I could not board the plane and fly to the United States. I am still not sure exactly how the US border was secured yesterday (since here I am, writing from within the US, having/lacking the same documents I had before), but at the very least my unpleasant conversation with a less than polite bureaucrat gave me the plan that we took.

I called Delta, and after paying more for the ticket change than I paid for the original tickets (not to mention the per ticket re-issuing fee...), had our Ottawa-Las Vegas tickets changed for Syracuse-Las Vegas tickets. We called Laura, asked her and Kevin to come back to the airport and made a run for the (not quite as secure) border.

After driving 130 kilometers to the Thousand Islands crossing, we exited the 401 and smacked right into what we would later discover was a 3 hour traffic jam covering the 5 kilometers between the exit and the US border. After taking 20 minutes to get to a U-turn opening, we backtracked 40 minutes to finally cross into the US at Ogdensburg - an uneventful crossing only worth mentioning because Gavin's expired passport was the document that let us enter, as it (along with Teague's valid one) proved that our 'made in Taiwan' boys were, in fact, Canadian citizens. What keeps you out at one border is what you need to get in at another. Irony abounds...

After backtracking on the south side of the river (on a much slower road) to the I-81, we finally made our way to Syracuse, not with the two hours to spare but with just enough time to check in and board the plane. Our 12:30 departure was now a 6:17 departure, and rather than flying to Detroit (which is actually in the right direction) we made our way down to the South and had a stop in Atlanta, Georgia. We were finally able to feed our children (we filled the van with gas after we left the airport in Ottawa and grabbed a dozen donuts - that was it for our kids from 8 AM until almost 9 PM) before getting on our final flight to Las Vegas.

To top things off, we sat on the tarmac for 20 minutes before being able to de-board in Vegas (we actually had the same thing happen in Atlanta), but finally made our way to baggage claim where we were met by Gramma and Grampa Blue Eyes. 24 hours and thousands of dollars later (we'll see if our travel insurance will cover any of that - but if not there goes next year's vacation, so family and friends, we'll have a bed ready for you when you come visit Ottawa!) we finally stumbled into bed.

Despite the frustrations and the very long day, our kids again proved themselves to be travelling troops, with hardly a moan, a groan, or a cry during the entire ordeal. And Jen and I found we were able to smile and laugh at the insanity of our day.
