Making Amends

At the end of the last school year, Kaleb made a mistake and wronged a friend.  During the summer his conscience got the better of him and he confessed what he had done.  He felt really bad and wanted to make things right.  I told him the best way to feel better is to apologize to his friend and ask what he could do to make amends.  That's exactly what he did.  It's hard to humble yourself and admit your wrongdoings, but his friend graciously forgave him.  She also said instead of paying her back, to pay it forward.  Kaleb thought that was a great idea!

The only problem was that Kaleb didn't have any money.  He decided to sacrifice a mommy-son date and to donate the money we would have spent on the date to the Children's Hospital.  That Friday night we went on our non-date to make the donation only to discover that the foundation closed at 4:00 and was only open weekdays.  Kaleb was so disappointed!  We weren't sure when we'd get to go again with those hours.  Well the opportunity arose when Kaleb had his own appointment at CHEO.  He was so excited to finally complete this journey.  I was so proud of him for recognizing his mistake and repenting of it.  Kaleb you are a wonderful example to me.  I love you!

Unbirthday Party

Run, run as fast as you can...

...to say Belated Birthday to the Gingerbread Man!

Gavin's friends joined him for a fun day of gingerbread men/women making.  First they colored pictures of gingerbread men and houses while they waited for everyone to arrive.

Then they decorated foam gingerbread men.  Googley eyes, pom poms, pipe cleaners, presents, hearts, glitter glue- oh what fun!

We had pizza for lunch and most of the kids ran off some energy in the basement.  These 2 stayed upstairs visiting and admiring all of the gingerbread people.  These 2 also happen to be born only 2 days apart- too cute!

After lunch they got to decorate real gingerbread men...

...the cookie kind that you get to eat, yum!

Since we already ate the cupcakes I made for the original birthday party date, I wanted to make a different treat for this party.  Candy Cane Oreo Truffles anyone?

Instead of loot bags the kids got more cookies!

Gavin's friends spoiled him with lots of fun gifts- Pokémon, Angry Birds, Mario Kart, Transformers, and more!

One friend couldn't come during the party time, but he got to join us in the afternoon for another mini-party.

And so did his darling little sister.

Another friend couldn't make it either, but he did bring over a gift.  These darling bowties!

I love them!  Yeah, my boys can rock the bows just as cute as any girl can, ha ha!

*Gavin felt very special enjoying the day with his friends.  Gavin you ARE special!  We love you SO much!!

More Snowmen

The little boys were playing together one day.  Gavin made a train track with bridges and tunnels.

Teague made a snowman.

I love it when they play nicely together!

I took my Activity Day Girls at church sledding, then we came back for some warm hot chocolate and made these cute doughnut snowmen.  I forgot to get Peppermint Patties though, so the hats look like Shriners Fez instead of tophats, ha ha!

BoM Feast

In the January 2012 Friend magazine they had a reading chart of the Book of Mormon broken down into 52 kid-size bites.

We had been reading the 4 Scripture Stories Books (Book of Mormon, Old Testament, New Testament, and Doctrine & Covenants) to our young children.

We really enjoyed this "feast" as we were reading the real language of the scriptures, but in smaller portions to hold the children's attention.

I wrote to the Friend and asked if they would make similar charts for the other standard works.  They wrote back!  They said they didn't do one for the Doctrine & Covenants this year, but they are already working on one for the Old Testament to come out in January 2014.  I put in a plug for the story of the daughters of Zelophehad.  We'll have to see if it makes the cut!

Frosty Friends

We've had so much snow!  I was really hoping we'd get a snowman this year.  The snow falls really wet, perfect for snowmen.  Too soon after it dries out and turns to powder.  Great for skiing, but not building.
Kaleb was determined to build one though.  One day after school he set out and made 3 big snow balls.  He stacked the second on successfully, but when he tried stacking the last one on it completely crumbled taking the middle ball down as well.  He was so sad!
He didn't give up though!  The next day he decided to build a short two-snowball tall snowman.  He turned out great!
Frosty and Kaleb, sweet winter friends!

Bubble Bath Baby

All of my kids have LOVED their baths.  Hiram, not so much.  This day he was enjoying it so I had to grab the camera.
Hard at work lining the toys up.
Hooray!  They're all in a row.
Bubbles smell good, but NO they don't taste good!
This is so much fun!!

A few of my favorite things

I remember when the twins were tiny and we went home for Christmas they called their grandparents' homes "The Christmas House."  I have been adding to our own Christmas collection each year and this year we have finally become our own Christmas House- we had decor in every single room!  Here's a few of our favorite new additions:
Willow Tree Nativity
Collage of artwork from the Savior's life
(This was first displayed last Easter, and I'm so excited I'll get to display it again in a couple of months for this Easter!)
My daughter Noé was with me several times at Michael's this season and would always stop at this Santa and ask for it as the NOEL looks like her name- Noé L.  I always said no, until it went on sale for half-price, then I surprised her with it.
Of course, I had to get the JOY for my sweet boys too!
My painted Santa from North Pole, New York
My 2 Jim Shore Santas
My Christmas Subway art
(my sweet friend, Mary gave me this frame with Subway art for each month last year- I love it!)
My cutest Santa!
My friend, Rita made this "Believe" and frame for me to put with our Christmas card collage
All of our stockings in a row!  They're not new, but I just love them!

I told Leonard that next year I don't need to add anything to our indoor decor, so we can finally get lights for outside.  He was thrilled with that thought.  But then, well, I started thinking again and wouldn't a large canvas artwork over the fireplace look great.  I've already sketched it out- JOY to the world!  And after making the colorful glitter ornaments for our basement tree, I think I need to make some white ones for our master bedroom tree.  I really need to finish my 4 snowflake frames too and my crafts that I didn't finish from this year's Super Saturday, and, and, and, yep Christmas crafting and decorating are part of my Christmas joy and I think it will be a permanent part of our holiday celebrating!  But everything MUST come down this weekend!!

Winter Blues

After Christmas is over I tend to get a little blue.
I love the holiday and season so much that I'm sad to see it go.
We received lovely Christmas gifts this year that were purchased by monetary means.  At our FHE after Christmas we decided to give 42 more gifts to one another.  These gifts are not purchased by money, but by time, kindness, and love, and they will be given all year long.
We each wrote up a list of the gifts we are giving to our family members.  Then I compiled them onto other lists of what everyone will receive.  I posted them in our laundry room so we can be reminded when needed.  Here are a few of my favorites:
Leonard will receive from Teague:
eat my dinner
I will receive from Hiram:
sleep through the night
Kaleb will receive from Daddy:
cook more together
Noé will receive from Kaleb:
play together more
Gavin will receive from Mommy:
read more stories
Teague will receive from Noé:
watch Dora together
Hiram will receive from Gavin:
kindness when the train tracks get wrecked

I hope this becomes a tradition we cherish each year!

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas TREES!

The master bedroom tree with our Christmas Eve jammies.
The living room tree with our Christmas Day presents from Santa and Mom & Dad.
The basement tree with our Boxing Day gifts from both sets of Grandparents.
How lovely are your branches!
