Tickled Pink? Sunny Yellow? Cheerful Orange? (I need a happy color idiom here!)

What a difference a day makes! So yesterday was the first day of school. After getting the kids ready we walked them the far distance to catch their bus (it's right in front of our house, literally, and the school is a whopping 3 blocks away.) Even though they are growing up so fast, they looked so little getting on that big yellow bus full of strangers. Off the bus went, and I burst into tears. I've always driven them to school on the first day to walk them in and meet their teachers. Their new school recommended them to ride the bus as usual the first day, and the students don't learn who their teacher is until after the first bell rings on that first day. All day I thought about them, and wished I could be a fly on the wall to see how they were doing. The lucky thing about being a twin is you don't have to be the "new kid" all by yourself (as I went to 5 different elementary schools all by my lonesome). The time for school to end arrived fairly rapidly and I went out to greet them at the bus stop again. As soon as they stepped off the bus they had HUGE grins on their faces and gave me big hugs. They had a great day! They're so happy to be able to be in the same class this year (old school wouldn't allow it), they like their new teacher, and they even have a friend from church in their class too (I didn't even know she went to this school.) Makes my heart happy knowing they did well their first day. I'm sure they'll have another wonderful year too.

Some thoughts on my little boys. Gavin can start public school here NEXT year! That blows my mind. I think it's too young to start at 3, but their deadline is December 31st- so he makes it by 2 weeks. I DO NOT want him to go yet (or then leave home at 17), but I do want what's best for him, so we'll see how the year goes and decide then what we think is best. My concern is if we hold him back the year we'll have to start him in Senior Kindergarten and I don't want him to be at a disadvantage compared to all of his classmates who went to Junior Kindergarten. I'll talk to the school about that one. He is also growing up so fast though. His language is quickly changing from Gavenish to English everyday. He went from speaking full Gavenish sentences with an occasional English word or two thrown in, to speaking full English sentences. I love that he can communicate with me better, but I so miss the Gavenish. He tells me everytime he's gone to the bathroom now too, but the trick is to get him to tell me BEFORE so I can get him on the pot first. Until then, he's staying in diapers. I'd much rather change a dirty diaper than clean up an accident on the rug. He'll get there though.

Teague is growing by leaps and bounds. He is SO long! Might be my tallest, and he already weighs 15 pounds. He is also very talkative and has a pretty deep voice for a baby. His smiles are from ear to ear and they just light up his face and melt my heart. I know when I was pregnant I was hoping for a girl, but I am truly in love with this little boy and wouldn't trade him for the world (and neither would his sister).

So the magic transformation of me becoming Super Mom after we arrived in Canada hasn't happened, but I have seen signs of her slowing emerging. I'm loving that I am content with our reality and that things don't have to be perfect. I've had antibiotics in my system for almost 48 hours, so most of the soreness (sourness) is gone and I'm feeling much stronger. I still feel so blessed for the amazing husband I have. He is so incredibly supportive of me and our children. I would seriously be lost without him. I'm just really enjoying the ride of life right now, and wanted to write a happy post!

Last day of Summer Blues

The kids go back to school tomorrow, so sad and exciting. I'm really going to miss having them with me all day, and they are extremely nervous about going to a new school. We went to orientation this past week and their new school is so cute, even its name is right out of a storybook. I know they'll make new friends and have a great year with their new teachers, but of course it will take some adjusting time.
I had big plans for today, but unfortunately have been battling mastitis all weekend- really not fun! The temperature outside was 63* (it still is August, I am so scared for this winter!) but I had a fever of 103* so it felt good (except when I had the chills). Even though today didn't go as originally planned the kids did get almost 3 extra weeks of summer vacation than if we stayed in Taiwan. Plus, next weekend is Labor Day, so hopefully we can do what I wanted to do today then.
Looking ahead- hopefully I won't have the day after Christmas blues this year, as we are back in the land that celebrates Shopping Day! I mean Boxing Day- tee hee. I hope everyone has a Happy New School Year!

Back in the Great White North (and back on-line finally!)

Yes, we are back in Canada and Ottawa is just as pretty as I remembered it! It's been so nice returning to our Chapel Hill family and not having to start completely over again. Since we've been here, besides visiting with old friends and making some new ones, we've been busy shopping for furniture, assembling furniture, unpacking our suitcases, long-term storage stuff, and our sea shipment. We're still waiting on our mini-van (it's here, we just can't have it yet) and furniture for the dining room, family room, and our headboard. We drove to Montreal on Wednesday to get a table and chairs for our kitchen. We had been waiting this whole time for the Ottawa store to get it in-stock, and I finally gave up on them so we hit the road to Quebec. It was a beautiful day for a mini road trip. If I think too hard about all that we still have left to do I'll go crazy, so instead I keep reminding myself that "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." We've taken that first step and even if we're taking baby steps along the way we're still progressing. The kids have one more week of summer vacation before school starts and then Len's paternity leave ends the following week. The time has gone so fast, but I'm anxious to get into our new routine.

We had a nice time in Vegas visiting with family and friends. If we missed you this year, we'll catch you next year!

We still think of Taiwan everyday. However, it's already starting to feel like a dream. We miss our wonderful friends there, but we will keep in touch.

I have 364 e-mails to get through, and I need to post pictures from our summer adventures thus far. Like everything else I'm working on now, I'll eventually get them all done.

Ottawa really is a beautiful city and we love company- so come and visit us anytime!!!

The Thriller

This is one of my favorite albums, and I'm taken back to 3rd grade every time I listen to it. I don't know what to think about Michael Jackson's personal life, but in his professional life he was one of the most talented. It's weird that he's gone now. I read some interesting things about HIM on Wikipedia. I hope the media will be kinder to his children than they were to him and that they can live their lives in peace.

Back in the USA

We miss our Taiwan Family already, but we are safe and sound back in the States. I won't be able to post pictures until we're in Canada and have everything hooked up, but I hope you all have a great summer!

Always HARD to say Goodbye!

It's the eve before our last full day in our home of the past 4 years. I have been very emotional today. I'm excited to see family in Vegas, and I'm thrilled to get settled in to OUR first home, but I am really going to miss Taiwan. It is a beautiful island with beautiful people. Even though I despise driving here, my heart has been touched by Taiwan and I'm afraid I'm going to leave a piece of it behind after we leave. Our family has been blessed by getting to know lots of wonderful people that have become a part of our "Taiwan Family." For the past 3 summers, I've had to say goodbye to great friends, and now that it's our turn to go it's even harder. We've had another fun week though, and here are some tidbits:

Window on China AKA Little People Kingdom

In love with a red lantern

Calling all Knights and Princesses

The 3 Musketeers and the 2 Sidekicks

After 3 weeks of playing hard, tomorrow will be a full day of working hard. We've got to get the house clean, all the laundry done, and everything packed in our suitcases. Tuesday, the packers come to box everything up and we're off to the hotel. Wednesday, we'll do the final walk-thru of our apartment (and hopefully fit in a massage at the hotel). Thursday, we're flying to Tokyo, San Francisco, and finally Las Vegas. For those of you in Vegas, let's get together! We wish you all a Happy Canada Day! and a Happy 4th of July! I have to leave on a happy note, so enjoy my all-time favorite song of the summer MINT CAR!
